Preserving the Caribou

Protecting the barren-ground caribou is a top priority for all northerners. Government, aboriginal hunters and the outfitters must work together to come up with solutions that respect the rights of all. The teachings and traditions of Aboriginal elders are especially valuable now, and must be observed by all northerners, and all hunters.

  • Never kill all members of a group or herd, instead select only a few animals to harvest.
  • Allow the leader of a herd to pass. Select an animal from those that follow. This helps to ensure knowledge of routes and good feeding areas is passed on to younger members of the herd.
  • Take only what is required, and share what is taken with others.
  • Use all parts of the caribou and treat the carcass with respect.
  • Never waste caribou meat.
  • Report your kill to ensure accurate counts.
